After pondering over the decision for quite sometime now, the team behind Linux Mint has decided to finally let go of the current snapshot cycle in the Debian edition for the fame Linux distribution and insead instead switch over to a Debian Stable package base. Clement Lefebvre, the leader of the Linux Mint project took to the distro's official blog to reveal the same.

"After a long reflection and many discussions the decision was made to switch Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) from its current snapshot cycle to a Debian Stable package base. The transition from Update Pack 8 to Debian Jessie should be smooth and similar to a traditional UP upgrade, in sync with the upstream Jessie freeze planned for November this year," Clement Lefebvre was quoted as saying in he blog. With that said, those concerned about the scheme of things following the announcement should know, the switch won't make a big deal for the end-users. Rather, most people will not even notice the change when it comes, even as a Debian-based Linux Mint distribution is currently being worked upon by the developers.

The current Linux Mint editions are based on Ubuntu and the team is most likely to stick to that for at least another couple of years. The team recently launched the latest iteration of Linux Mint, aka 'Qiana'. Both the Cinnamon and Mate versions are now available for download with the KDE and XFCE versions coming soon as well. Meanwhile, Clement has already announced that the next three Linux Mint releases would be in all probability also based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.
